ColonView lateral flow tests are intended for simple detection of fecal occult blood (FOB) in stool samples. The detection of blood is based on sensitive and specific immunochemical detection of human hemoglobin or hemoglobin/haptoglobin complex. The principal application of Biohit ColonView Hb and Hb/ Hp tests is to screen for lower gastrointestinal (GI) pathologies, such as colorectal cancers and large adenomas that bleed. Screening for colorectal cancer can improve cancer detection at an early, still curable stage, therefore reducing mortality.
ColonView Hb test detects whole, intact human hemoglobin. Hemoglobin dissociates during its passing through the gastrointestinal tract. For this reason, ColonView Hb test is especially suitable for detection of bleeding from the colon and rectum.
Hemoglobin that has dissociated is bound by haptoglobin protein to form Hb/Hp complex. Hb/Hp is a more stable molecule than hemoglobin, and there is evidence (9) that bleeding from large adenomas can be found better by detection of Hb/Hp, rather than Hb, in stool samples. Almost all colorectal tumors develop from large adenomas, and their removal is an efficient way of preventing colorectal cancer. Combination of ColonView Hb and Hb/Hp testing may therefore aid both detection and prevention or colorectal cancer.
As Hb/Hp complex is more stable than hemoglobin, its detection in stool may also indicate bleeding from GI tract above the colon. Combination of ColonView Hb and Hb/Hp testing can aid localization of the bleeding prior to further examination.
ColonView Hb and Hb/Hp tests are provided with easy-touse patient Sample Collection Kits that include all that is needed for convenient home sample collection, without the need to touch stool samples. The same sample can be used for both Hb and Hb/Hp testing.
ColonView Hb and Hb/Hp tests are simple, one-step lateral flow tests that give results in 15 minutes.
